Welcome to the Jungle: Animal Prints in Interior Design

Animal print has developed a misleading reputation for trouble. Often, decorating novices avoid the notoriously problematic pattern for fear of the space appearing “too loud” or “tacky”. But as we all know, there’s a good thing and then there’s too much of a good thing. Embrace your inner exotic with these designer tips and see how luxuriously alluring an animal print aesthetic can be!

Emily Johnston Larkin, the Dallas based Owner and Principal Designer of EJ Interiors LLC, refreshed this neutral bedroom with a carefully curated mix of patterns. Not surprisingly, the designer is recognized for her fresh and stylish creations, often including bold pattern play. Though eye catching, the animal print pillows actually act as another neutral in the space, complementing the other patterns instead of competing.

“It helps if you think of animal prints like blue jeans- they work with everything, even though it seems like they shouldn’t,” said Chicago based interior designer, Summer Thorton. “Try an animal print ottoman or small rug. Eclectic and glamorous, this pairing will completely change the look and feel of a room,” suggested the designer.

Kathleen Burke, a California based interior designer known for her ability to merge modern luxury with timeless aesthetics, added a little exotic excitement to this living room in the form of animal print. “Just because the bergere has a staid and classic shape, doesn’t mean it has to have a sedate fabric,” reminded the designer.

New York based Shields & Company Interiors, under the direction of Gail Shields-Miller & Daniel VanHall, has earned a reputation for executing eclectic, yet traditionally inspired interiors among the firm’s fashionable clientele. This project illustrates the firm’s talent, showcasing stunning symmetry. From the striped curtains to the floral sofa and animal print ottoman, the various prints offer coveted continuity through the key ingredient of the same color family.

Don’t shy away from pairing animal prints with vibrant colors, like the neon lime green accents used on this balcony. Treated as a neutral, the animal print beautifully balances the bolder bright colors.
