Make a statement. Your own.™Jewel: A Home for the Heart Jewel Murray, an artist, poet and musician best known by her first name, grew up in a log cabin in Alaska with her father and brothers. But her design aesthetic extends beyond rustic country, incorporating handcrafted netsuke from Japan, French and Swedish antiques, and an eye for the telling detail, whether it is where to hang art, or putting framed birds’ eggs from Alaska and Texas in a bathroom. As a teenager, Jewel studied opera and guitar at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Her talent literally became her meal ticket when she found herself homeless and living for a year in a VW van out in California. Making ends meet by performing at small local coffee houses around San Diego, she eventually built a loyal following among audiences who appreciated her haunting melodies, shy beauty, and wry lyrics. Atlantic Records signed her in 1995 and, her first album, “Pieces of You,” eventually yielded the top ten hits “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “You Were Meant for Me,” and “Foolish Games,” and went platinum 12 times! By the age of 21, Jewel was a star. Her newest album titled Lullaby, is for people of all ages, not only for children. She is a chameleon on stage, beginning a solo acoustic performance with an a cappella rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and ending with her trademark yodeling. She has applied that kind of versatility to the rest of her life, working as a talented painter and sculptor, putting in a successful turn as an actress in Ang Lee’s film “Ride With the Devil,” writing poetry and an autobiography, and signing on to appear on the next season of TV mega-hit “Dancing With the Stars,” which will debut on March 9. She is aware of how fortunate she has been, which fuels her passion for giving back, whether it is through her support of breast cancer awareness or the Project Clean Water charity she formed with her brother Shane Kilcher. They have helped 30 villages in 13 countries build wells and add water filters to provide quality drinking water. Marriage was a big step for someone who writes songs like “Love Me Just Leave Me Alone,” and “I Don’t Care,” but in 2008 Jewel married her long-time boyfriend, the championship cowboy Ty Murray. They make their home on a 2,200 acre ranch in Stephenville, TX, where she’s personally taken on the project of renovating his 1970s-style ranch house. She has already designed a separate studio and guest house, where she focused on silence and tone, light and warmth, and ensuring an open and welcoming feel. Statement Maker Library
