Karastan Adds Striking New Collection to its Studio Series
March 01, 2006
-With a look that is distinctively different, Karastan has added Artworks, a spirited and refreshing seven-rug collection to its STUDIO by Karastan series.
Setting the Artworks designs apart is a combination of wool with specialty accent yarns in a hand crafted construction that yields alluring textural qualities and carved definitions of decorative details. The texture and dimension are even more pronounced by the contrasts of low areas of loop pile and higher sheared pile. The color palette is dynamic and punchy, illuminated by shimmery effects. The motifs are fun, expressive and artful with a variety of lifestyle applications suggested.
“When STUDIO was originally created three years ago, it was meant to broaden Karastan’s appeal to more fashion-conscious and modern-minded consumers,” explained Elizabeth Miller, senior vice president style and design. “We’re still targeting that audience, as well as those decorating a second home or wanting a more personalized expression of their style. STUDIO also will strike a chord with a more cosmopolitan type of consumer,” she said.
A standout in the new Artworks assortment is Bistro. It is a treat for the eye with a charming patchwork composition of calico-like floral designs. The fine details of the artwork are accentuated by the careful hand carving that adds a bas-relief type of definition. It is a rug that is easily imaginable in a casual décor where slipcover furnishings invite a relaxed mood. The color palette is sunny and cheery. Maize yellow predominates, joined by rattan, cedar, Provençal red and Mediterranean blues.
A profusion of delicate flowers in calico-style provide the all-over decoration of Colette. The cheeriness of this pattern is irresistible. It’s available in sunny yellow or Provençal red and, in either color, it’s clearly a compatible mate to Bistro.
Couture is a fashion inspired design that will bring extraordinary charisma and vitality to a room. A bold stylized floral elegantly occupies the rug’s full dimensions. It’s richly colored in lush berry, olive, terra cotta and espresso hues. The interplay of the yarns and hand crafted textures creates a suede-like appearance that makes Couture irresistible
Asian influences are given a modern interpretation in Mimosa. This floral has a light and airy appeal and is a design that defines “transitional”—able to complement almost any décor or furniture style. The large graphic blossom that is repeated in the pattern is a berry and terra cotta hue, and it’s offset by sage greens and mochas.
Clean, sculptural lines and contrasting color blocks characterize Tango and Bolero. There’s symmetry in both. Tango’s color blocks combine with a playfully curvaceous pair of lines to produce a modern flair. Espresso, olive, terra cotta and berry colors make this the moodiest, and perhaps edgiest, of the five Artworks patterns. Bolero gains its more dramatic features from three short yet central black bars that punctuate its formation of color blocks. The dominant hues in this rug are olive and berry. The size availability for all seven is 3.6-x-5.6; 5-x-8; 8-x-10; and, 8.6-x-11.6. Estimated price for the 5-x-8 is $499.
