Karastan Takes A New York City Bow With Show-Stopping New Rug Designs

November 01, 2006 -Karastan took New York by storm introducing a raft of exquisite new rug designs as a first-time showroom exhibitor during the Metro Rug Alliance Market Week in September. Topping the entries was Karastan’s take on “Peshawar”—the current rug style that has the home furnishings world abuzz. Also to be found was a palette favoring liberal use of black, plus patterns that continue to offer livable luxury—a strong Karastan trait. The collections were on view for retailers plus press and media at 295 Fifth Avenue, #1412, the showroom quarters Karastan often shares with sibling Mohawk Home.

A Rug Rage… Not since “tea wash” less than 10 years ago has there been such excitement about a rug genre as there now is with “Peshawar.” The authentic Peshawar style is distinguished by softened palettes and subtle shades of color achieved by using vegetal dyes on specially twisted hand-spun wool. Inspired by the elegant aesthetic of these versatile rugs, Karastan’s design team has developed its own masterful collection, Shapura. Using meticulously placed color to create the same type of subtle nuances of visual texture characteristic of Peshawar weaves, Karastan is able to offer the design-forward area rug customer the unique texture that, until now, was not consistently available in a high quality machine woven rug.

Initially three Shapura patterns have debuted: Athena, Tiana and Tiana Ivory. The tonal qualities of all are striking, and, thanks to Karastan’s complex Axminster production process, each has the appearance of a fine hand knotted rug. Athena is recognized by its weathered brick coloration with chalky accents of blue and green; Tiana features a gentle pattern on a field of bottle green shading. Tiana Ivory incorporates the same elegant lines, but on a subtle ivory ground. All are constructed of luxurious fully worsted New Zealand wool, which also assures they will be as practical as they are beautiful.

Size availability includes 5.9-x-9; 8.8-x-10; and 8.8-x-12. In addition, Karastan is able to custom hand-seam rugs together to create over-sized styles in a fraction of the time it would take to weave and import a similar rug.

Peshawar Inspired… Another variation on the Peshawar theme is Captiva, part of Karastan’s Samarkand Collection. This New Zealand wool rug is woven in a cheerful saffron yellow that brings warmth and brightness to any interior. The pattern is relaxed, open and occupies the full frame of the rug. The subtle striations are a detail that simulates the visual effect of natural dyes. The size offering includes 2.9-x-5.1; 3.11-x-5.1; 5.7-x-7.8; and, 8.2-x-11.4.

Black, The Fashion Statement… Empress Kirman Black joins the Original Karastan series and is a pattern that reflects the endurance of black as a chic and trendy look in home fashion. It also is a dramatic design—one of Karastan’s timeless signature Panel Kirman patterns transformed by a liberal use of black and studded by lush corals, turquoise blues, maize yellow, moss greens, soothing taupe, and soft mocha. This rug is a luxurious complement to today’s popular micro-fiber, twill and leather furnishings. It also is the perfect coordinate to Karastan’s Agra Black, which has proven to be a rising star in the brand’s assortment since its introduction less than a year ago.

Empress Kirman Black shares all of the quality features of other Original Karastan rugs, including an Axminster woven construction of fully worsted New Zealand wool. Size availability is 4.3-x-6; 5.9-x-9; 8.8-x-10.6; 8.8-x-12; and, 10-x-14.

The Luxury Neutral Make Its Debut… While black delivers a powerful punch, on the opposite end of the spectrum neutrals can carry their own impact and Karastan’s design team proves the point with Taupe Tabriz, an addition to the Persian Renaissance Collection. The ground is taupe, but by no means is it an ordinary neutral. With accents of deep red and coral, plus the “sparkling” highlights of the genuine silk yarns, this is a new breed of luxury neutral.

“Taupe Tabriz is a very livable, versatile look,” said Elizabeth Miller, senior vice president of style and design. “The classic pattern and subtle colors can add finesse and polish to the décor of a room.” The Wilton weave features a dense New Zealand wool pile that is sheared to a velvet finish. What’s more, there are tonal striations in the ground that contribute added visual depth.

Taupe Tabriz is available in 2.7-x-4.11; 3.11-x-5.6; 5.2-x-7.5; 6.7-x-9.10; 7.10-x-11.1; and 2.7-x-11.1 runner.

A New Infusion of Color for English Manor…Warwick, a new addition to the classic English Manor series, is saturated with color—paprika, predominantly, with accents of ocher, khaki, espresso, soft blue and moss. There is a hand made appearance to this pattern, which was inspired by an intriguing Sultanabad carpet.

Another English Manor newcomer is Regent’s Park, and this design also underscores the unwavering interest in fashion black for the home. This pattern is a dramatic interpretation, with radiant colors that include ocher, paprika, khaki, soft blue, espresso and moss.

Both Warwick and Regent’s Park are exquisite companions, and, like all in the collection, they are woven in the U.S.A. of premium New Zealand worsted wool and finished with Karastan’s patented Lustre-Wash, which yields a wonderfully soft hand and a durable construction.

Size availability includes 2.6-x-4; 2.9-x-5; 3.8-x-5; 5.7-x-7.11; 8-x-10.5; 8.6-x-11.6; and, 2.6-x-8 and 2.6-x-12 runners.

Tempting Textures… It is hard to ignore the highly textural hand crafted compositions of Plum Blossom and Zen Garden that were added to Artworks. This collection is part of Karastan’s STUDIO series, which was developed to appeal to a more fashion-conscious and modern-minded consumer. It’s a group also likely to appeal to those decorating a second home or wanting a more personalized expression of their style.

The leafy branches that overlap in graphic layered arrangements in Plum Blossom create a compelling design that has depth and dimension. The robin’s egg blue, mocha and teak color combination has hip written all over it, with accents of pearl and maize yellow. Zen Garden, a coordinate, is fresh and modern, featuring orderly stripes of stone-like shapes. The size availability for all patterns in this group is 3.6-x-5.6; 5-x-8; 8-x-10; and, 8.6-x-11.6.
