THE MAKING OF A KARASTAN

We started producing carpets in the 1930’s. Back then, carpet was a luxury few could afford. All that changed with the invention of our patented Kara-Loc® loom which brought the comfort and beauty of carpet to homes across America.

So advanced was the invention of the Kara-Loc® loom, that it remains our preferred method of weaving. In addition to our Kara-Loc® looms, we use tufting machines to craft our carpets. Both methods produce quality carpets, but with different looks, textures, and wear attributes.

Woven Carpet: Weaving is the superior method of producing durable and beautiful carpet. Visually, a woven carpet is exceptional because it produces precise patterns, which cannot be replicated using other methods. What’s more, a woven carpet is incredibly strong and will never delaminate, pull, or zipper because the pile yarns are interlocked with the backing. Those made on Kara-Loc® looms bury less yarn in the back than other constructions, giving you more face carpet for your dollar.

Tufted Carpet: Tufting is the fastest and most economical method of manufacturing carpet. To make a tufted carpet, loops of yarn are inserted into a primary backing material. The carpet is dyed and a heavy layer of latex is applied to lock the loops in place. A secondary backing is bonded to the first for added strength and stability.
